Graphite

M&L MINING  » Graphite

Tanzania is a significant graphite-producing country with substantial graphite reserves, particularly in the central and southeastern regions. Major graphite projects include Mahenge, Bunyu, Lindi Jumbo, and others. Several companies, including Baridi Group and Black Rock Mining, are actively involved in exploring and developing these deposits.

Key Aspects of Graphite Mining in Tanzania:
⦁ Significant Reserves:
Tanzania holds a substantial portion of the world’s graphite reserves, estimated at nearly 5%.
⦁ Major Projects:
The Mahenge Graphite Project, owned by Black Rock Mining, is notable for its large resource base and planned production. The Bunyu and Lindi Jumbo projects are also progressing, with the former recently receiving approval for production and the latter already shipping graphite concentrates.

⦁ Companies Involved:
Besides Black Rock Mining and Baridi Group, other companies like Volt Resources and EcoGraf are actively exploring and developing graphite deposits in Tanzania.
⦁ Geographical Distribution:
The largest graphite deposits are located in the central and southeastern regions of the country, including the Ulanga district where Mahenge is situated.
⦁ Infrastructure:
Some projects, like Bunyu, are strategically located near infrastructure, including paved roads and the port of Mtwara.

⦁ Global Demand:
Tanzania is well-positioned to benefit from the increasing global demand for graphite, particularly for use in lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles.
Specific Projects:
⦁ Mahenge:
A large, JORC-compliant flake graphite resource owned by Black Rock Mining.
⦁ Bunyu:
A wholly-owned project by Volt Resources, located near critical infrastructure, including paved roads and the port of Mtwara.
⦁ Lindi Jumbo:
A project with a high-grade graphite deposit and a focus on premium flake concentrate production, being developed by Walkabout Resources.
